PRODUCER ROB CAVALLO’S 514C HAS THE MIDAS TOUCH
Music industry veteran Rob Cavallo, who’s produced some of the biggest names in contemporary music, revealed in a phone chat with Taylor Artist Relations hombre Bob Borbonus that his 514c is becoming “legendary” in Hollywood music circles.

The 1996-minted mahogany/cedar Grand Auditorium, which has been on five number-one singles, was Billie Joe Armstrong’s axe of choice on Green Day’s “Time of Your Life” (he nicknamed it “Excalibur”), and is featured on the latest Green Day album. The guitar also was used on “Uninvited”, the Alanis Morissette-vocalled song Cavallo produced for the soundtrack to the Nicolas Cage/Meg Ryan film, City of Angels.

The Goo-Goo Dolls got plenty of use out of Cavallo’s 514c on the number-one single, “Slide” and on “Iris”, both from their album, Dizzy Up the Girl, on which the Dolls also used an AB1 Taylor acoustic bass. Cavallo produced Eric Clapton’s recording of “Blue Eyes Blue” for the soundtrack of the Julia Roberts/Richard Gere film, Runaway Bride (it’s also on Clapton Chronicles: Best of 1981-1999). Old Slow Hand liked “Excalibur” so much he borrowed it for three or four months, during which he scored an upcoming Rob Reiner film.

STAGE, SURF & SECOND ACTS

Dave Matthews performed a four-song set on MTV’s TRL (Total Request Live) in late February, using his 714 on three tunes. In April, Matthews’ guitar techs told our Bob Borbonus that the bandleader loved the sound and look of a 914c (2000 model) he tried at a Seattle-area music store, so he added it to his Taylor stash.

Our own Bob Borbonus attended the Grammy Awards in March (he was radiant in a lovely Vera Wang strapless), where he worked the room and talked Taylor with a slew of artists and guitar techs. Paul Simon’s band showed great interest in our guitars, and U2’s The Edge told the Borb he loves Taylors and wanted to order a couple of cutaway models for some acoustic tunes U2 is doing on its “Elevation” tour. The Edge subsequently bought a 914ce (which he's been using onstage) and a 614ce, both with tobacco sunburst finishes.

Bon Jovi axeman Richie Sambora gave a Richie Sambora Signature Model to his pal, Joe Perry. The Aerosmith guitarist liked the axe so much he used it for 90 percent of the acoustic parts on the band’s latest release, Jaded.

Another actress has satisfied her Taylor jones. The March issue of InStyle magazine featured a pictorial spread covering nine actors who enjoy other creative passions. Among the profilees is actress Gloria Reuben (“Jeanie Boulet” on ER), whose side gig as a singer-songwriter earned her a paycheck as a backup singer on Tina Turner’s tour last year. A full-page photo shows Reuben in an intimate musical moment playing her 512.
